How to fix missing system tray icons at Windows XP startup?

After you start the computer, one or more of the icons that should be present in the system tray (notification area) of the Taskbar are often missing

The cause of this problem is not known, but it's almost certainly a bug in Windows XP. There is no known solution, but there are workarounds that may reduce the frequency of this annoying occurrence. It's always worth giving the remedial measures a try.
