BANGALORE, INDIA: The role of open source in IT industry always differs from one company to another. With the dominance of proprietary software, most of the enterprises are yet to focus towards adoption of open source solutions in their organization.
According to a new study, open source is slowly gaining momentum in the enterprise sector and developers are also embracing it.
In an interaction with CIOL, RamPrasad Kan, chief technologist from Wipro Technologies shares about the obstacles, that enterprise often face while adopting open source software.

CIOL: Can you brief our readers, what Wipro is doing in open source area? RamPrasad Kan: Wipro contributes to several open source community projects and creates IT solutions using open source technologies. Wipro has established a framework consisting of process, methodologies and guidelines for adoption of open source in projects.
Wipro’s emerging technology Centers of Excellence (COEs) extensively use open source for experimentation and discovering new use cases for industry adoption. Wipro has established partnerships with companies offering support for open source tools.
CIOL: With the dominance of proprietary software, how do you see the adoption of open source by enterprises?
RK: Many open source projects are being acquired by proprietary product vendors and are being offered with enterprise class support. Enterprises are using open source products where they need freedom to customize as open source tools provide a high level of flexibility to modify. The pace of open source adoption is steadily increasing.
Proprietary vendors will focus on delivering an integrated stack of hardware and software and delivering business process functionality, reliability, ease of use and efficient management.
