AMSTERDAM: Wakoopa, the online social network for discovering software, games and web applications has published "The State of Apps: Software, Games and Web - Q2 2009" trend report.
The report highlights emerging trends in desktop software, game and web application usage across Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.
The statistics in the report were generated during the second quarter of 2009 by more than 110K software enthusiasts and early technology adopters who are users of Wakoopa.com.
Key findings revealed in "The State of Apps - Q2 2009" report include: * Twitter continues to experience steady growth and was used by 25 of the Wakoopa community. Twitter usage peaks around 9 PM daily and is one of the most actively used apps at that time.
* Facebook narrowly beat out YouTube as the most popular social media site among Wakoopa users. Other popular social media sites included Flickr, MySpace, Last.fm and LinkedIn.
* The biggest overall newcomer on Windows for Q2 2009 was The Sims 3, a game released at the end of March 2009. The new Twitter client, Tweetie was the most popular newcomer on Mac. Additional newcomers on all platforms include Hulu Desktop, and Seesmic Desktop.
* The biggest overall gainer on the Web was Habbo, a social networking website aimed at teenagers. The second largest gainer was social media community Orkut, designed to make your social life more active and stimulating.
* The biggest gainers by platform were Freegate (Windows), Prism (Mac), and Google's Chromium (Linux). The biggest fallers by platform were AVG Anti-Virus (Windows), Movist (Mac) and Prism (Linux).
* America's Army 3, a game developed by the United States Army, emerged as a leading newcomer this quarter. Other popular games in Q2 2009 included The Godfather II, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Plants vs. Zombies. World of Warcraft continues to be the most actively played game worldwide across both Windows and Mac, and is played most often around 9 PM.
* Firefox was the most popular browser with 55 percent of all Wakoopa members in Q2 2009. Google Chrome is the second most used browser worldwide among Wakoopa users, except in Asia where Internet Explorer is the top browser of choice. More then 90 percent of all Linux users utilize Firefox as their primary browser.
* Windows Live Messenger is the most popular instant messaging app on Windows across all age groups, followed by Skype. Adium is the most popular IM app on Mac across all age groups with the exception of people over 50 who prefer Skype. Pidgin is the leading IM app on Linux across all Wakoopa age groups.
