BARCELONA, SPAIN: Volantis Systems today announced that its device information library has reached the milestone of 6,000 devices.
With more and more people choosing to access the Internet from their mobile handsets, there’s an ever greater need for Internet software which can react and adapt to the changing device landscape.
“We’re seeing the rate of change in mobile handsets continuing to accelerate,” explains Mark Watson, Volantis’ chief executive officer. “So we’ve had to continue to get better and faster at getting new device information to our customers in a timely and accurate manner.”
It caps a year of advancement in which Volantis has made great strides to help connect social media and the mobile Internet. This has been achieved by incorporating Web 2.0 capabilities into many of the core Volantis products, including its open source Mobility Server, Ubik.com and the “Social” Storefront. Highlights include:
Site building applications: Volantis launched both Ubik.com and Site Builder in 2008. Ubik.com platform is a free web-based service that focuses on helping consumers and small businesses build mobile websites without any technical knowledge or training. Site Builder takes the same platform and offers service providers the ability to provide their customers with a way to build personal mobile sites.
Mobile enterprise software: With the BuzzCast Solution for Apple’s iPhone and Google Android, Volantis provides mobile subscribers with a way to brand mobile content feeds. This is the first Volantis-built on-device application for mobile devices. Feed Builder leverages BuzzCast as a web-based platform that allows mobile subscribers to manage, aggregate and design their own mobile information and content feeds. Also in 2008, Volantis launched the “Social” Storefront, which connects mobile subscribers directly with Facebook, allowing users to recommend mobile content, such as music, mobile games and ringtones, through their profiles.
Open Source development tools: Volantis open source Mobility Server allows web developers to build and run their own mobile Internet applications, thus expanding the mobile platform.
In a recent blog post titled What I want for Christmas is fewer PC Imperialists, Gartner analyst, Nick Jones, draws attention to the growth of the mobile web in comparison with the fixed web, noting that “300 million PCs are sold a year and well over a billion handsets.” Jones acknowledges the importance in developing a mobile presence, saying: “There are some great adaptation tools from companies like Volantis ... that can morph your web sites into more mobile-friendly forms and support thousands of different devices.”
“Many people now access the Internet through their mobile devices. We expect that the number of people that this applies to will grow and the rate of which to accelerate,” said Watson. “As it does so, Volantis will continue to provide technology that will unlock the true potential of the mobile web.”
