NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecom (DoT) has invited expression of interest from operators and infrastructure providers for participation in the Universal Service Obligation (USO) project for setting up infrastructure for mobile services in rural areas across the country.
The department is targeting to set up 10,000 towers in the rural areas where telephone services are unavailable. Financial support would be offered to the company, which wins the bid and sets up and manages the passive infrastructure.
According to the financial support being offered under the scheme has been divided into two parts: Passive Infrastructure comprising of shareable components like land, tower, electrical connection, power back up, boundary wall and security cabin. Active Infrastructure comprises non-shareable components such as Base Transceiver Station (BTS) equipment with associated antennas.
