NEW DELHI, INDIA: Japan's Sony Corp is recalling thousands of its Vaio portable computers because of faulty parts that could trigger overheating. The recall is for its VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300 and VGN-TZ2000 series that were manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008.

The Tokyo-based consumer electronics company said a faulty wiring connecting the main body of the laptop and its display could cause overheating near a power plug or the rim of the screen, sometimes distorting the shape of the computer.

The US Consumer Products Safety Commission said on Thursday that the vendor would recall 74,000 machines in US, after Sony received 15 reports of overheating, including one consumer who suffered a minor burn. The Kyodo news agency said the recall was for 4,40,000 units worldwide.

A Sony spokesperson said, "The issue involves a small number of units which may overheat due to a wiring problem. Sony has initiated a voluntary program to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a repair."
