Canon India eyes top slot by 2009

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Canon India is targeting to reach the top in the digital printing space by 2009.

With the digital printing industry predicted to become $17 billion by 2010, Canon is eyeing a major chunk of share to climb the ladder for the top position. According to industry estimates the current market for the digital printing industry is at $11 billion.

Som Gangopadhyay, director, Business Imaging Solutions Division, Canon India said that the company is targeting the top slot in the digital publishing industry. “The digital printing industry is witnessing a huge growth with the replacement of offset printing press. Customized demand from customers is acting as a catalyst for the overall demand of digital printing,” he said.

Currently Canon holds around 18 per cent market share in the digital printing space. Xerox tops this space, aggressively followed by Canon. According to a recent study by PIRA, an international research agency, India’s digital printing industry is growing at a rate of 73 per cent.

“We cannot estimate the market share that will drive us to the top slot, but the aggressive growth will make us No.1 in it. We will be the market leader by 2009,” Gangopadhyay said.

However, the recycled products tap a major chunk of the share. Commenting on the recycled products, Gangopadhyay said, “It has been affect the growth of the market as the legitimate players are unable to identify the growth. Those could include the big brands but they are not sold by the respective players, rather those are products which are recycled and are in the market,” he added.

The company is also planning to set up five world-class demo centers in the country. Gangopadhyay said that they are setting up two such centers in Gurgaon and Mumbai by the year-end. “We will be setting up three more demo centers in Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata by the end of 2008. These centers will be more as knowledge dissemination centers about the latest printing products and solutions,” he said. The company has outlined an investment of $2 million for setting up the demo centers.
